EHS Specialist

Under the general direction of the Manager, supports all aspects of the company’s EHS program for the Ontario, CA Distribution Center. Works with the EHS Manager to identify pertinent initiatives and assumes primary role in implementing appropriate policies and procedures, directing group initiatives and overseeing day-to-day issues and activities. Responsible for program development and implementation. Assists in critical decision-making regarding program initiatives and overall strategy.

Job Description Details

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Implement policies and procedures relative to regulatory requirements (largely includes federal and state environmental and occupational safety and health agencies) and/or best management practices.  Incorporate internal and external peer and legal review in the document development process and present final drafts to senior management for approval, where appropriate.
  • Fulfillment Center: actively spends time within the Fulfillment Center for assessing, auditing and completing observations related to unsafe behavior and unsafe conditions and general job hazard evaluation.  Addresses concerns and reports finding to the site EHS Manager and site Leadership team.
  • Oversee the implementation of corporate level programs at the site level, assisting in customization of policies and procedures as necessary to coincide with site operations.
  • Fulfillment Center: adequate time utilized for administrative tasks associated to SIRT, metric reports, leading indicator tracking reports, IH activities, job hazard assessment development, ergonomic observations, OSHA log compliance and other similar administrative tasks and meetings.
  • Fulfillment Center: compliance and BMP training, site leadership safety training and on-boarding, new hire safety orientation, EHS Solutions meetings.

  • Oversee the corporate Workers’ Compensation program, ensuring all claims are handled consistently and efficiently resolved.  Routinely communicate with the insurance carrier and broker to review issues and periodically evaluate open claims, program costs and resolution strategies.
  • Support initiatives and on-going projects associated with the company’s sustainability program, including event planning, committee facilitation and activity tracking.
  • Develop monthly, semi-annual and annual reports on EHS program performance.  Periodically present performance summaries to senior management at the corporate and site level and assist in the implementation of recommendations related to performance improvements.
  • Focuses on developing personal leadership Brand and developing as a Leader of Self.  Identifies internal and external opportunities for personal and professional development and growth. Works with the site EHS Manager to assist development of the site EHS program.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Minimum B.S. in occupational safety, environmental health or related field.  Certification by American Society of Safety Engineers (CSP) or American Board of Industrial Hygiene (CIH) preferred.

Experience:  1-4 years previous experience working in an industrial environment and a solid background in Safety program administration.  

  • Knowledge in environmental and occupational safety and health regulations
  • Excellent working knowledge of computer applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint required; Access preferred)
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills in both technical and non-technical terms
  • Good facilitation skills, ability to collaborate effectively with company personnel at all levels
  • Ability to listen and document discussions and meetings
  • Ability to foster a positive work environment by promoting teamwork, open communication, and corporate culture
  • Periodically may be required to lift products weighing up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to travel overnight
  • Ability to work split shift
